  • The October 2008 issue of Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource highlights sinusitis, short naps, and stress.
  • For the first time, accumulated data demonstrates that women diagnosed with a reproductive cancer, especially ovarian and uterine (endometrial) cancers, experience improved outcomes when treated first by a gynecologic oncologist. The 2008 State of the State of Gynecologic Cancers: Sixth Annual Report to the Women of America, published by the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF), details these results.
  • The Southern Nevada Dental Society hosted a banquet at the Gold Coast Hotel on Sept. 9 — an event to present an award to the dentist of the year who has contributed to his/her profession along with service to the community. This will be a yearly affair — the first of its kind — and the award will be named The Fae Ahlstrom Award.

  • Dr. Jean Furuyama offers quick, useful suggestions about clearance tabs. Choose the widths you need so you don't over-reduce the prep.
  • Functional cosmetic dentistry allows the practitioner to practice on multiple levels. It is a holistic and high-tech approach to cosmetic dentistry. By integrating the best from cosmetic, holistic, laser, and bioesthetic/neuromuscular dentistry, you can have a very successful system of practice and approach. Many patients today want the very best from dentistry beyond just having a pretty smile.

  • Despite the information disseminated at dental conventions, webcasts, Internet forums, and peer-reviewed publications, integrating nonsurgical therapies eludes many practices. Today's women dentists have little time and increasing workloads. Equip your practice with this information about comprehensive nonsurgical therapy modalities and help eliminate the epidemic of poor oral health in America. Make a commitment to your patients and your practice today!
  • Pandemic flu is a virulent form of the influenza virus that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness in humans. Planning, communication, and coordination are the key elements to prepare for any future pandemic outbreaks. According to the CDC, modeling estimates indicate that nearly 2 million people in the United States are expected to die from a pandemic flu if conditions remain as they are today. As dental health-care providers ...
  • Vulvar cancer is the fourth most common cancer of the female genital tract. In 2008, roughly 3,460 cases of vulvar cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and about 870 will die of this cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. The symptoms may or may not be obvious. But like many cancers, the earlier the cancer is detected, the more curable it is. Vulvar cancer has a high cure rate, as long as it is detected and treated early.

  • We consider the most important factor of an ideal continuing-care department to be the purposeful conversations that happen during the adult prophy, periodontal maintenance visit, or the quadrant of scaling and root planing. These conversations identify and address patients' motivators and concerns; educate about oral health issues; build commitment to a lifetime of oral care; support self-esteem and success; and encourage referrals.
  • How often do you receive a standard envelope in the mail? How many times have you heard "I'm away from my desk or on the phone. Please leave a message at the sound of the tone, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible"? How frequently do you get asked, "I didn't catch your name. What's your name?" Take off your sign that reads "I am so predictable." Get creative!
  • Many of us find change difficult so we avoid it at all costs. We tell ourselves we like our life just the way it is, and that becomes our justification for inaction. Why rock the boat? Yet, life gets stale and we yearn for growth and newness. What's a person to do? In order to embrace change, you must change the way you look at change. Change is an opportunity to create something new so that your life becomes more fulfilling. How wonderful is that?

  • The ADA coding system undergoes updating and revision every two years. Under an ADA licensing and royalty agreement, I also publish a single coding handbook with all codes, guidance for claims, information on narratives and attachments, and other information whenever the codes are revised. For 2009-2010, there are only four new codes with 29 description wording revisions, so only an addendum is being added to my handbook.
  • Many professional women experience complex webs of business and personal relationships on a daily basis, composed of balancing career and family. With full plates personally and professionally, the pressure of chasing down overdue patient debt is an added stress, which derails many women dentists from focusing on other aspects of their practices. The sooner you find help from a third-party collection agency, the better your chances of recovering overdue debt.
  • Business ownership is risky and stressful, but taking that risk can have enormous long-term rewards. To do well in private practice, dentists must be salespeople who can sell themselves and the services they offer. They've got to be teachers who can teach dental health to often unwilling patients. Most of all, they've got to have guts! There are some differences in how women manage the pressures of motherhood and business.

  • From sports in Chicago to the ADA meeting in Texas, from personal to professional accomplishments, we experience thanksgiving in all areas of our lives as we interact with our family and colleagues and anticipate a wonderful future together.
  • There is hope! Uncertain times call for deliberate measures. The current financial crisis should have little long-term effect on your financial investments, if you are not planning to live off of your investments within the next few years. That being said, the current situation will have a short-term effect on your dental practice and personal spending. The next two years will be especially difficult if you were hoping to sell your home, refinance your debts, or borrow money.
