  • Despite the down economy, now is NOT the time for practice owners to panic. It's time to PROMOTE your practice. The most serious money management mistake you can make in your practice right now is to cut back on or stop promoting in an effort to save money. That is what your competitors will be doing. Take advantage of the reduced advertising "clutter" and be the one dental practice your current and potential patients will likely hear from.

  • There is one simple, time-saving procedure that I use extensively and find invaluable for fabricating interim partial dentures, occlusal guards, night guards, sleep apnea appliances, etc. The procedure involves using a quick plaster blockout of the cast prior to sending to the laboratory for prosthesis/appliance fabrication. This article describes the fabrication of an interim removable partial denture replacing Tooth No. 7.

  • Oncologists, endocrinologists, and hematologists are all concerned about the possibility of osteonecrosis as a very rare complication of bisphosphonate therapy, but dentists should be more concerned. The risk of the complication of osteonecrosis of the jaw needs to be weighed against the oral rehabilitation of the patient. We should not act alone regarding bisphosphonate therapy. As always, thorough medical histories and physician consultations are imperative.
  • You see that magical blue line and a torrent of emotions rushes through you. In the next nine months, your body will go through amazing changes as it prepares for the marathon of birth. You imagine yourself huge as a whale, with little energy and many aches and pains. But wait! These are images of pregnancy past. Modern-day research has shown that exercise during pregnancy can have numerous benefits.
  • Next time you're in your doctor or dentist's office, take a moment to look around the reception room. Is the carpet clean? How about the receptionist's desk? Next, visit the restroom. Is the sink clean and shiny? How is the soap dispensed? First impressions influence our opinions, and it's easy to see how a messy, unkempt waiting room or dirty bathroom would make you question the infection-control practices used in the dental treatment areas.

  • It used to be that when a patient had a good experience in the dental office, the highest compliment would be to tell someone about it — another parent in the carpool, maybe, or a neighbor she ran into at the grocery store. Now it seems that the first person to hear about your patient's experience is a complete stranger who logs on to one of many Web sites that invite users to review everything from dog groomers to plastic surgeons.
  • Many things come to mind when I think of patient compliance. One is the importance of patient compliance in order for dental treatment to last and be totally beneficial to the patient. Another is the importance of the dentist and hygienist to be able to work alongside one another to achieve patient compliance. Other things that come to mind are the patients. There are many parts to this puzzle, but we can be very influential in helping patients be compliant.
  • Guilt just seems to be everywhere, if you let it be, that is. You must remember that no one, including you, can make you feel guilty without your permission. So stop giving that permission! Here are some steps you can take to stop this destructive emotion. Give yourself a break and break free from the guilt so that you can live your life to the fullest.

  • The greatest obstacle to success is complacency. The Economic Bailout Bill is going to affect you in some small ways but it is not intended to bail you out from your financial problems. You cannot rely on government to help you increase your net worth. You need to take charge of your own financial decisions! There is hope for dentists! Some of the most successful practices I counsel continue to produce at the highest levels they have in the past three years.
  • Implant dentistry is a proven treatment option for patients with missing teeth. While the number of implants placed has increased, so have patients' questions about whether or not an implant is for them. Further complicating the issue is the fact that many dental insurance plans do not cover implants. Here are some specifics.
  • From the Broker — Associates, beware! You may be missing out on extra income. From the Financial Planner — Be aware of the cost of lost opportunity in remaining an associate for too long. Be sure your economic picture is clear.
